Utah boasts the greatest snow on earth, and its bounty is not confined to downhill ski resorts.  The Wasatch and Uintas provide classic ski opportunities for every kind of snow enthusiast. and Park City, vying for the title of best nordic town in the West, has multiple systems of groomed nordic track.

Much of the southern Utah canyon country also provides touring opportunities that include Utah’s many national parks.

Note that dogs are strictly prohibited in many of the areas around Salt Lake City to preserve watershed quality.

Nordic Resorts

  • Outside of Ogden (north of Salt Lake City) Snowbasin offers 26 km of groomed track, without charge.
  • At the end of Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude Nordic Center offers 20 km of groomed track.
  • At the end of Little Cottonwood Canyon, Alta offers a 5 km groomed track.
  • In Park City, White Pine Nordic Center offers groomed track in town.
  • South of Park City, Sundance Resort offers 15 km of groomed track.
  • In a mountain valley southeast of Salt Lake City, Soldier Hollow,  which hosted the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic cross country events, is often ranked one of the best x-c resorts in the country. It operates on Wasatch Mountain State Park.

  •  The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA) grooms a number of areas near Salt Lake City, including about 10 km of track at Mountain Dell  just off I-80 as it climbs east out of Salt Lake City.
  • Mountain Trails Foundation also grooms a number of areas in and around Park City, including Round Valley, pictured at right.
  • The Union Pacific Rail Trail parallels I-80 east from Park City for nearly 30 miles.
  • The Mirror Lake Highway  in the Uintas east of Salt Lake (highway 150, 15 miles from Kamas) is closed to automobiles and groomed for skiers and snowmobiles.   Before you get to the trailhead at Soapstone campground, The Beaver Creek trail is groomed for skiers only between the Yellow Pine and North Fork trailheads.   • Near Ogden, Ogden Nordic offers 20km of groomed track at Weber County’s North Fork Park.
  • Salt Lake County Parks has several parks suitable for skiing.
  • Mill  Creek Canyon offers about 8km of up-and back track (about 1,000 foot elevation gain) very close to downtown Salt Lake City.  Map.

Wilderness Lodges

  • White Pine Touring in Park City manages a yurt in the Uintas, six miles up a forest road.
  • Salt Lake Country Parks and Recreation offers the Big Water Yurt up Mill Creek Canyon.
  • TUNA offers a yurt off the Mirror Lake Highway (north of Kamas) that accesses steep backcountry slopes.  You must take their certification course before you may reserve the hut.
